Our Legacy
Maldanga Rajendra Memorial Institution was established in 1948, marking a significant milestone in the educational development of the Maldanga region. The foundation of the school was the result of sincere efforts and generous contributions made by Sri Anadi Mondal and his associates. As a tribute to his father, a highly respected figure in the locality, the institution was aptly named in memory of Sri Rajendra Babu.
The school initially began its journey as a Junior High School and gradually expanded its scope and curriculum. With its growth in stature and infrastructure, it evolved into a High School, with Sri Sudhakar Garai appointed as the Headmaster during this transformative period. Under his leadership, the school began to establish a strong academic foundation.
By 1955, students from Class V onwards were admitted, and by 1961, the institution had successfully prepared students up to the matriculation level (Class X). Although during that era some schools began offering Higher Secondary education (Class XI), Maldanga Rajendra Memorial Institution continued up to the School Final level for some time before eventually upgrading to a Higher Secondary School.
The school attracted students from various nearby villages, many of whom walked barefoot distances of up to 5 kilometers in all seasons to attend classes. Students and teachers residing on the eastern side of the Khari Nadi (Khari River) often crossed the river by ferry to reach the school. During the intense heat of summer, particularly in May and June, the school operated on a morning session schedule.
The teaching staff in the early years included several dedicated educators who played pivotal roles in shaping the academic and moral character of the students. Alongside Headmaster Sri Sudhakar Garai and Assistant Headmaster Sri Subodh Chatterjee, notable teachers included Sri Naren Babu, Arindam Babu, Dasarathi Babu, Baladeb Babu, Dol Gobindo Panditmoshai, Bimal Babu, Shankar Babu, Subhendu Babu, Panchu Babu, Anil Babu, Lakshmi Babu, and Tejnarayan Babu. Later, a very senior and respected teacher, Sri Aboni Babu, also joined the institution.
Cultural activities were an integral part of school life. Saraswati Puja was celebrated with enthusiasm, and it was during this occasion that the students, under the guidance of newly appointed science teacher Sri Shankar Babu, staged the first cultural drama, Baikunther Khata by Rabindranath Tagore. This marked the beginning of the school’s strong cultural tradition.
The socio-economic conditions of most students during those days were modest, which limited access to higher education for many. However, those who were able to pursue further studies generally completed their graduation, with a few entering professional streams like engineering and medicine, or enrolling in polytechnic institutions. Employment opportunities were relatively more accessible at the time, and students were confident of securing jobs even after passing the School Final examination.
As time progressed, both the academic and infrastructural profile of the institution underwent significant transformation. Under the leadership of Headmaster Sri Nemai Babu, Maldanga Rajendra Memorial Institution emerged as a pioneer school in the region. It began attracting students from distant villages due to its academic reputation and high success rate in Secondary and Higher Secondary Board Examinations.
The school produced students who went on to succeed in Joint Entrance Examinations, gaining admission into esteemed engineering and medical colleges across the state. Many alumni also secured seats in reputed general colleges throughout West Bengal, bearing testimony to the institution's rising academic standards.
Maldanga Rajendra Memorial Institution continues to serve as a cornerstone of education in the region. Its role in nurturing generations of students and providing them a strong platform for the future remains undeniable. The school has not only imparted knowledge but also instilled values and discipline that have shaped the lives of its students.
Today, as proud alumni, it is a shared responsibility to contribute back to the institution that laid the foundation for our success. Through active participation in the MRMI Alumni Association, we can ensure that future generations benefit from the legacy we inherited. Together, we can uphold and elevate the name and spirit of Maldanga Rajendra Memorial Institution for years to come.
